Because people's decisions on country policy aren't considered connected to their decisions in their personal lives.

A person who would break their word to someone who they promised their life to cannot be trusted to keep their promises to the public.

If you demand power, you have to honor being given that power. If you abuse it, you should be punished.

The matters of the heart are a little more fickle than the rules and laws that bind people, aren't they?

When you're asking people to trust you with their home, you have to be better than that.

Complete restraint over your own emotions is an impossible fantasy.

Complete restraint over your actions is possible.

And you don't just betray a person in a moment. You have to decide on someone else, you have to get them to agree, you have to perform the act. And that's just from knowing a little about that sort of thing. Who knows how many extra steps are involved in actual practice.

Struggling to communicate isn't the same as replacing someone without even telling them. They're owed that much.

I talked about people in power being killed for being untrustworthy.

If they can't handle a personal relationship, how can they handle deciding the fates of others they would have no personal investment in. How did they get there? Clearly a dangerous person.

If a common person has one of these affairs, then it's up to their spouse if they want to kill them or not.

Whereas in my world, it's the killing the spouse part that would get you in trouble with the law 'cause you're expected to be able to handle your personal relationships without getting violent.

Killing gets some of the heaviest punishments in my world.

If you don't want to die, be strong, or get friends who are strong. Or make sure you have good family bonds.

Murder is, and other variations depending on how intentional the murder was.

Hmm... I can't say my world's completely done with "might makes right" as a concept, but most of the laws in places generally discourage that kind of thinking.

The idea that those with the power in strength or numbers to kill others for their offenses are considered "right" because of it. My world at least likes to set up laws that those with leadership power are supposedly beholden to the same as any common person, and executions are left to the government only after someone's had a trial in which all evidence is presented to determine if they were or were not guilty of the crime they were accused for.

Execution's also reserved for higher crimes to begin with. Like... murdering your spouse because they weren't faithful to you, for example. An affair is a personal matter that people are expected to settle between themselves; killing someone the government hasn't determined as worthy of a death sentence is the actual crime.

But how does the government hold the people in it accountable? If the spouse isn't in the government, how would the spouse with the affair be punished by those they work with?

The affair doesn't get punished, because it's a personal thing. The murder does get punished if they get caught, which is easier to do when everyone's got jobs and registries with the government.

Of course people register with the government and has jobs. [Because why wouldn't they.] That's the only way to get any sort of order.

Seems pretty unfair. They can say when people can kill each other, but don't give consequences for that level of dishonesty and corrupted character even amongst their own.

Humans are flawed beings, after all. But more than that, I think people in my world try to err on the side of "preserving life for rehabilitation"... or at least, that's the theory.
