[The first few flaps are awkward, too hard, getting used to wings.]

[But he IS very aware of how his body works and how physics work and he's nothing if not an extremely quick learner, getting a more steady beat to stabilize his flight.]

[Kino's moving more smoothly, but they already went through the basics with Alexander. Still, after performing a swoop towards the ground for funsies, they'll ascend again to hang around and see if he needs any assistance.]

[He seems to be getting the hang of it. Its certainly Different from a staff, but its kind of awesome in its own way.]

[He doesn't NEED the staff to fly like this.]

[He finds himself laughing at that thought.]

Ready to try going higher?

What? You think I'm afraid of heights?

[He is immediately going to start going higher.]

[Trying to outspeed him - and they aren't even cheating with powers (yet), although that'll change if he uses his own.]

[And wings on himself may be new, but flying is not. And there is still a need to understand air flow with a staff to get the most out of it.]

[And THAT he knows how to feel for and he's gonna use it, feeling for currents to catch and when to let momentum do the work.]

[It's okay, they can just take advantage of his technique to draft behind him and keep up the speed with less energy on their part.]

[Well, really can't have that.]

[He glances back and]

[Snaps wings to his sides and goes into a dive to clip right by Kino.]

[The dangers of following.]

[They're only briefly startled before they continue to hurry to ascend, if he wants to dip downwards again that's his problem!!]

[Hey, they asked for what he can do and trick flying is about it.]

[Also now following their drag to see what they'll do.]

[They don't have much flying technique - not nearly enough experience - but they can raise their wings to slow their ascent and see if he runs into their talons before they beat again.]

[Wings are new, but being in the air isn't, and neither is a close range attack. Its the same reason he can dodge Quick As A Wink, he's had to train himself to react to things appearing quick and in his face.]

[Which makes normal speed a lot easier, pulling his in his wings quick, grabbing the talons as they get close to his face and he pulls down HARD, and kicks off Kino's legs to move up.]

[The kick off is a lot more gentle then the pull down since that could Actually Hurt.]

[They're yanked down, losing their lead and scowling as they beat hard to try to catch up again!]

[He's not going straight now, to avoid giving drag to follow, and maybe just to show off. Following a current up several dozen feet, before folding his wings to dip to the side until he feels another current to follow up into the sky. Even with little twirls for flare.]

[He's totally showing off, isn't he.

But no matter how hard they beat their wings, they can't seem to catch up.]

[He absolutely is. Space based magic was a talent of his and that comes from quickly taking in the space around him.]

[And there is something about being part bird that does...feel right.]

[So he's gonna show off a few minutes more before looking back.]

Stop flapping a moment. Spread your wings wide in a glide.

[They'd take note of the happy expression more if they weren't currently competitive as fuck.

With a sulky expression, they take his advice and...

Pay attention to your wings. Its more surface area, and the individual feathers make it easier to notice.

Once you're used to being in the air, you get an instinctive grasp of the air even without the surface area, but for now, feel which of your feathers is getting the most air and lean into that.

[He was spared the competitive trait. Mostly because he's got enough pride As It Is.]

[But there is a part of him that Loves To Teach.]

[Fortunately for everyone, their natural curiosity is bubbling up again.]

Are you used to having wings?

Not on my person. I fly with a staff. But while propulsion is different, flying itself is much the same.

Sure, you can use magic to force yourself to go against the wind, like beating your wings more, but if you can feel where the wind is, it's easier to fly faster, do more with your flight, and using other spells with a staff effectively. Try to port in a gorenado and you're likely to end up slamming into a rock as much as open air.

Do you remember if that's a common method of transport where you're from?

Staves, yes.

Porting, no. Porting involves turning your body into energy that still has a semi-physical presence. Which can get you through things. It can also get you trapped in things. It's a complicated bit of magic, so you don't want to use it unless you have clear end points or great reaction time.

So porting can be more convenient in some ways at the cost of time and energy learning how to do it.

It is a lot faster. And with it comes better spatial understanding. Reactions time. And it makes you very hard to counter in a fight, especially when most favor distant spells.
